Decluttering Tips For Your Nashville Home
You may have heard about Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant who’s appeared on numerous talk shows as well as hosted her own Netflix special. It all started with her book called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. That’s all it took to spur a decluttering craze all over the world.
She has a tiered-pronged approach to getting things tidy: #1, place your hands on all items you have and ask yourself whether or not each object brings you joy (if the answer is no, give thanks for its service and toss it) and #2, put all remaining items in places where they will be visible and accessible. If you’ve been struggling with housekeeping and decluttering, you will want to sit up and take notice of these lessons by Marie Kondo.
Tackle Categories Rather Than Rooms
If you’ve always decluttered by room, you may want to take a different approach. Tidy by category, such as clothing and books. It’s easier to start off with clothing because it’s not as emotionally loaded. Once you’ve taken care of the functional items, you can move onto books and photographs.
Respect Your Belongings
It sounds extreme, but Kondo says you should consider your clothing’s feelings: do they like being squished into the back of the closet or crowded onto metal hangers? Do your socks like to be balled up and thrown randomly in a drawer? If your clothes look miserable, make them happy.
Don’t Get Caught Up in Nostalgia
You’ll probably come across lots of nostalgic stuff when cleaning your home, such as letters, old photos and kids’ artwork from kindergarten. Try to keep your blinders on, focusing only on the category you’re on at the moment. If you start reading a letter from your old boyfriend, you’re about to start wasting some serious time.
Fold, Don’t Hang
If you hang a majority of your clothing in a closet, consider folding most of it instead. Kondo suggests a vertical folding technique that makes all your clothing and accessories easy to see and grab. This fabric origami approach neatly lines your drawers in rows. Using shoeboxes as drawer dividers is a great idea, putting scarves in one small box in the top drawer and sweaters in a larger box in the bottom drawer.
Rediscover Your Style
You may have been in a years-long rut of easy-to-grab, reliable clothing pieces as part of your weekly rotation. But you may be neglecting many color and style pieces because you’re afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Dip deep to the back of your closet and find the pieces that used to bring you joy. Start wearing them and expanding your style repertoire.
