Room-by-Room Guide For Deep Cleaning Your Home

Room-by-Room Deep Cleaning Guide

Many homeowners dread the twice yearly deep cleaning that is necessary to keep the house clean and beautiful. But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming and tiring when you have a plan in mind. Check out these tips to deep clean each room in your house quickly and effectively.

Declutter First

Go through all visible clutter in each room and make three piles: one to keep, one to trash and one to donate/recycle. Once you have the clutter out of the way, you can get deep down to the floors, ceilings, and everything in between without all that junk in the way. Plus, purging your home regularly is a mood booster and gives you an immense sense of satisfaction!

Start High, Go Low

Here’s how to approach large, hard-to-reach surfaces: ceiling, trim, light fixtures, walls, and baseboards. You’re best off using a microfiber mop or duster with telescope handle. These tools are great because they can fit in tight areas, such as behind couches and under entertainment systems.

Deep Clean Your Windows

You probably won’t realize just how dirty your windows are until you clean them. Windows are notorious for attracting dirt and dust, so don’t neglect these areas when deep cleaning. Start by vacuuming the sills and tracks to remove debris. Next, spray the window with glass cleaner or a homemade solution of vinegar and water. Work from top to bottom, wiping in gentle, circular motions. Wipe down the sills and frames with a damp cloth. Check the locks on all windows while you’re at it, making repairs as needed.

Clean Your Window Treatments

You probably don’t think much about your window treatments, but take a good look. If you see dust accumulating on your drapes and curtains, throw them in the wash. While they’re washing, wipe down the rods and rings. If you have blinds, wipe them down carefully with a damp cloth or use your vacuum with the brush attachment.

Dust All Surfaces

Wipe all wood furniture, shelves, and built-ins features with a furniture cleaner, polish and soft cloth. To get this done quickly, place a clean cotton sock on one hand and dust all surfaces, while moving objects out of the way as needed with the other hand. Use a lint roller on all lampshades.

Clean the Floors

Deep cleaning the floors is a bit more complicated because it entails moving the furniture, such as beds and sofas, to get underneath. It’s best if you have a partner to help you do this. Use furniture sliders under all furniture so you can easily glide them around without scratching your floors. Use the crevice tool on your vacuum to remove dirt in corners and along baseboards. For hard surface floors, use a cleaner designed for your particular floor as well as a microfiber mop.
